Milagres College Eco club plays an important role in creating environmental awareness amongst the future generation. The main motive of the Eco Club is to nurture and teach the importance of the environment to students.
Objectives
- Create awareness and sensitivity about various environmental issues
- Motivate the students to keep their surroundings green and clean by undertaking plantation of trees.
- To involve them in efforts to preserve the environment
- Develop skills, positive attitude, and ethics towards the environment.
- To create awareness among the student about the need for environmental Protection
ACTIVITIES
- ECO CLUB INAUGURATION
Eco Club of Milagres College Kallianpur was inaugurated on 17th January 2022 at 1.00 P.M. under the Mango Tree. Miss Aishwarya II BCom B welcomed the gathering. Dr. Vincent Alva, Principal Milagres College Kallianpur inaugurated the club by watering the plant. Miss Queezal D’Silva I BCA spoke on the significance of Eco Club and Samraddhi I BCom B proposed vote of thanks. Mrs. Savitha k, Principal Milagres PU College, Mrs. Rekha U, Director Eco Club and staff and students were present.
2. HERBAL GARDEN
In the present Scenario as all of us are now aware of how plants are significant to us. So in this direction a step was taken by Milagres College Kallianpur to grow a Herbal Garden in college premises with the collaboration of Inner Wheel Club, Udupi and MIlagres PU College, Kallianpura which was held on 04th August 2021. Inauguration of Herbal Garden was done by Very Rev. Fr Valerian Mendonca, Correspondent, Milagres Institutions, Kallianpura . The newly created herbal garden is intended to bring in awareness about the rich heritage and diversity of Medicinal Plants like Tulsi, Lemongrass, Neem, gooseberry, Aloevera, Brammi, Eclipta alba (Bhringraj), Piper Betle, Karpooravalli, Tinospora Cordifolia (Amrutha Balli) etc. These plants are the natural home remedial cures for a variety of diseases. The herbal garden came into being with the teamwork of the Green Campus Committee.
3. PADDY CULTIVATION
As many as 25 students of the Eco Club unit of Milagres College Kallianpur got a first-hand experience of working in the paddy fields as they planted paddy saplings in the slushy paddy fields at Chantar on 18th July 2022, Monday.
They took up the task of planting paddy saplings on three paddy fields of about one acre at Chantar near Brahmavar.The College authorities have, for the last three years, been taking students for planting paddy saplings in the fields.
Prof, Anil Danthy, HOD of Post graduation department, Milagres College Kallianpur, said that the objective behind this initiative was to give students an exposure to agriculture. “We do not want students to learn only from books. They should participate in extra-curricular activities also. This exercise will give them an idea of agricultural activities,” he said. But it was not just planting of saplings. There was fun too as the students participated in sports activities in the slushy waters, including a running race and a tug-of-war event.
All these made it a joyful outing for the students who loved every moment of it. After this exposure programme students are gave feedback on the programme is said they felt happy about this outreach programme conducted under the banner of Eco-Club and also learnt experiences through practically by cultivating paddy saplings in the field.
4. PLANTATION DRIVE
On the occasion of 73rd Republic Day 26.01.2022, Plantation Drive was carried out by the members of the Eco- Club of our college. Various medicinal saplings and vegetable seeds were brought by the eco-club members. In this drive, the staff and students of the Eco Club were actively participated and planted saplings. It was planted on the college premises. The drive was a huge success, empowering students with significant knowledge of the environment and plants.
5. Beekeeping Training:
The eco club of Milagres College Kallianpur, Udupi in collaboration with women’s cell of the College had organised training on Bee keeping.
A renowned bee keeping expert Mr Suresh Karkera conducted the session. He explained about developing bee keeping program and various species of bees.
Speaking on the occasion Dr Vincent Alva, Principal expressed his joy in teachers of the college getting trained in bee keeping. Having two bee keeping units in the college already, Dr Vincent Alva exhorted all present to beekeeping as a hobby or a pass time activity.
Students and teachers attended this program in large numbers.
6. PADDY CULTIVATION
As many as 50 students of the NSS, Rovers & Rangers, Humanity and Eco Club unit of Milagres College Kallianpur got a first-hand experience of working in the paddy fields as they planted paddy saplings in the slushy paddy fields at Chantar on 10th December 2022, Saturday.
They took up the task of planting paddy saplings on seven paddy fields of about 1.6 acre at Balamakki, Chantar near Brahmavar.
The College authorities have, for the last few years, been taking students for planting paddy saplings in the fields.
